Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; Washington to California, east to Montana, Wyoming, and Utah.
Habitat: Dry meadows, open coniferous forests, and riparian areas from middle elevations to the subalpine.

Stout, fibrous-rooted perennial from a short rhizome or woody base, glandular below, often with spreading hairs.
Leaves alternate, entire, the lower and/or basal ones broadly oblanceolate or elliptic, petiolate, 8-25 cm.long, the others sessile and clasping, oblong to lance-ovate, 3-11 cm long and 1-4 cm wide, reduced upward.
Inflorescence elongate; heads rather large, the involucre 8-14 mm. high, glandular, not much imbricate, the outer bracts 1-3 mm. wide and somewhat leafy, the inner narrower and purplish; rays 10-27, violet-purple, 10-15 mm. long; disk flowers yellow; receptacle flat, naked; papus of capillary bristles.
